Giveaway: Seventh Generation

Giveaway closed, thanks for entering.

I never really gave much thought to being green before I had kids. These days though I put a little more thought into the things I bring into our house that my kids will have contact with. I have been looking more into the foods that I am feeding my kids and have started cooking from scratch a lot more and trying to cut a lot of the processed foods out of our diets. Next on my list is cleaning. I have made my own cleaning solution that I use mostly for cleaning the bathrooms.  I jumped at the chance to do this giveaway and am excited to gives these a try.

Replacing what’s currently under your sink with products that are non-toxic and safe for the environment is easier than ever with Seventh Generation’s environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Leading the “responsible cleaning” charge for the past twenty years, Seventh Generation has tapped into the disinfecting power of the herb thyme, to introduce an EPA registered line of disinfecting sprays and wipes that kill germs* naturally! The new line of botanical disinfectant cleaners includes a multi-surface cleaning spray, bathroom cleaning spray and wipes.

The disinfectants contain thymol, a component of the herb thyme, and can be used on hard surfaces including counter tops, plastic cutting boards, highchair trays as well as children’s toys. Best of all, they kill over 99.99 percent of germs* naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.

Seventh Generation has partnered with eco-lifestyle consultant and author, Alexandra Zissu, whose new book, The Conscious Kitchen, discusses what’s good for your health, what’s good for the planet and what tastes great. Her book also includes great tips on maintaining a green and healthy kitchen, including:

Change is Good
Choosing cleaning products without indoor air pollutants like volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, is a simple and effective way to reduce your indoor air pollution. If you’re not prepared to switch everything overnight, start by swapping out the one product you use the most, and moving forward from there.

Think before you spray
Residues from cleaning products can last on a surface for longer than we we’d like to know and travel to areas that we sometimes don’t intend them to. Don’t contaminate your food by prepping it on a surface that may contain harsh chemical residues - rinse cleaning products from food preparation surfaces carefully or use botanical disinfecting cleaners that do not require a rinse step.

Home is Where the Clean Is
Your standard cleaners are good for removing soils and dirt from kitchen surfaces, but to tackle germs you need a cleaner that is effective against microbes like bacteria and viruses. Many cleaners contain ingredients that have antimicrobial properties such as vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, but the germ killing power of these is not necessarily guaranteed. To be sure you are killing germs, use an EPA registered disinfectant. Seventh Generation tapped into the disinfecting power of the common garden herb thyme, to provide a disinfecting cleaner that kills germs* naturally.

Make the Old New Again
Think twice about the items that you’re using to clean and dry your kitchen equipment and dishes. Use rags (like old t-shirts and washcloths) instead of paper towels. If you aren’t prepared to kick your paper towel addiction just yet, use only recycled versions that are unbleached or haven’t been whitened with chemicals containing chlorine and see how long you can make a roll last.

The Writing is on the … Sponge
Be sure to read the fine print on sponges and only purchase those that do not contain antimicrobial pesticides. Remember to store sponges in a dry place and frequently clean them by popping plastic sponges wet in a microwave for two minutes or boiling sponges for three minutes in water.

Mom Was Right, Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands with soap and water before and after prepping food, and always before eating. So much of what can be potentially harmful in a kitchen can be reduced by this simple act that doesn’t require any harsh chemicals whatsoever.

We are also trying to eat better too. I bought a lot of fruits today and I was thinking about how much less waste they have with them - rather than the bulky boxes of snacks I used to buy.
I'd love to try this stuff out! :)

What a great give-away! Especially for the type (like me) who needs and wants to go green, but isn't quite sure where to start!

We have always tried to eat healthy. My kids will eat all types of vegetables and we have a garden full of tomatoes each year that I make salsa from. Joey (my husband) hates tomatoes but loves my salsa...weird!!

OH I LOVE this!!! This is such an awesome giveaway!!! I'm VERY aware of what is in our food these days, and try my best to steer my kids to the "good" stuff. My daughter won't even touch french fries, which I think is AWESOME!!! Any how, we've been also trying to be aware of what we throw out and what we clean with. If anything is usable at all we freecycle it or repurpose it. Thanks again for the giveaway.

I am a very busy full time studen & single Mom of 2 boys. I've been thinking lately about trying out these products so that I can ask my children to help clean w/o the worry of the chemicals (I don't let them clean w/ anything now except soap/water when they do).

I came over from Frugal Burb Chick...

I usually make my own green cleaners with things like vinegar, baking soda and water. Our local watershed program offers great classes on green cleaning in Vancouver WA! I love 7th Generation, but find it alot more frugal to make my own. Occasionally I splurge on 7th Gen when I have coupons!

Recycle aluminum cans, shop at second hand stores, hang clothes outside in the summer....sometimes I clean with lemon and baking soda.

One of the things we do around here is recycle as much as possible. I recycle the normal things, but we go "beyond" that sometimes. We have been known to rinse off our coated paper plates for re-use (and even re-use our tea bags!) - just because we can!!

I am using more fresh and less processed foods. We are getting to the point where the amount of salt makes a huge difference and packaged or precooked foods are notorious for high sodium levels. Lots of other great reasons for not using processed foods. I've also started using microfiber cloths to clean with. It's amazing how effective they are with only water or a small amount of cleaning solution.

We eat clean. No processed foods and I've cut out all high fructose corn syrup in our diet. We also belong to a CSA and get fresh produce and free range eggs seasonally. Of course we also recycle and compost which does a lot to help!!

We do use green cleaners and I would LOVE to win this! Other things we do are recycle everything we can and conserve electricity and water.

I have tried some green products. Some of them work better than others. We do recycle a lot (we have once a week curbside recycling that takes all recyclable products now) as part of our garbage service and I have been making lots of us of freecycle.org to give away many things so they are reused.
