Applesauce

The girls LOVE applesauce, they would eat an entire jar in one day if I let them. I want to take them apple picking and make our own applesauce. I know that we will have to wait for fall to do this but once I started thinking about it I needed to do a test run. I had no idea how many pounds of apples would make how much applesauce. This week at the grocery store they had 5 lb. bags on sale for $3.99 so I thought it would be a perfect time for my trial. I ended up buying two bags because after seeing them one just didn't seem like a whole lot. First I used my handy dandy apple peeler corer to peel and core the first bag.  I started with one because after cutting up all those apples I realized that that is all that was going to fit in my crock pot at once.  I dumped them all in and turned it on high for about 4 hours and just kept mashing with a potato masher.  I got it down to pretty small piece but ended up putting it in the blender at the end.

It turns out that 5 pounds of apples is equal to 2 quarts of applesauce.

So it may no be cheaper than buying applesauce at the store but at least this way I know what is exactly in there and no preservatives.
